It’s been a while since I’ve talked about the Media Center I wanted to put together. I dropped plans of getting another machine, actually, I was vetoed once I got my new server. So, I’ve moved my main gaming computer into the living room to complement my XBox360.

Fon Wireless

If you don’t regularly read Slashdot.org, then you may not have heard about Fon. Fon is run by a company who’s idea is to propagate wireless networks around the world and make a large wireless network. They are backed by Google and Skype who have both invested in Fon. Fon is looking to accomplish this goal by having users download their special firmware for Linksys or Buffalo wireless routers or by purchasing a router from them for the special price of $5.
Why would you do this? Well, you get special privileges for setting up a Fon Social Router, as they call it. You can setup a Fon router in one of two different ways, as a Linus or as a Bill. If you setup a Linus router, others get to use you internet connection and you get free wireless access to any Fon router in the world. If you setup a Bill router, others use your internet access and you get 1/2 of the revenue generated by the router. See, Fon usually charges others who want to use the router $2 per day. So, a Bill router would generate $1 for each “daily pass” that is purchased.

I think this is a really neat idea so I dropped $5 into the bucket to get one of their Fon routers. From what I read on their support forums, the Fon router can piggie-back on your current wireless router. The Fon firmware has some special firewall rules that only allow Fon users to get to the internet and not your internal network which protects the machines sitting on your primary router. I’d say check it out and get a Fon Social Router for yourself. As the network expands, more and more free wireless networks will be available to those than setup a Linus router.

Comment Count Weirdness

For some reason, the comment count for a post has been showing 1 comment even though there doesn’t appear to be a comment for a post.  This seems to happen on some new and some old posts at random.  I’ve looked and it doesn’t appear that WordPress lost any comments and the comments are not sitting in the moderation queue which shouldn’t happen unless the basic WordPress spam filter snags it.  If you’ve commented on a post and it doesn’t seem to be showing up, drop me a note using the “Contact Me” link on the right.

This seems to have started with I upgraded to WP 2.0.3 last night but it’s hard to tell.

Fun WordPress Plugin

So, I’ve taken the dive into WordPress plugins. Yes, Saccia is still alive. I’ve been busy doing lots of stuff. Anyhow, I thought I’d drop this little tidbit on the blog.

On the right, you’ll see the link to the WordPress plugin I wrote called 360Voice Bits. It’s a simple plugin so far. It uses the 360Voice API to grab entries from 360Voice.com. 360Voice.com is a service that generates small blog entries based on your use of the XBox360. I thought it was a neat service and I wanted to add their entries to my site. My plugin is in the early stages but I hope to have lots of fun with it.

PDT On the Go

I’ve finally gotten around to adding another virtual host for a WAP version of Pure Digital Thought.  So, when on the go, you can point your mobile phone to http://wap.puredigitalthought.com to get a WAP version of PDT.  The WAP plugin for WordPress that I’m using generates a pretty plain version of this site.  I’m currently looking to see if I can find any other generators that allow the addition of small images to help spice things up a bit.

Uno for XBox360

I downloaded the trial version of Uno for the XBox360 last night. I know, I know…. what the hell? Card games for next-gen consoles? But, I have to say it was kinda fun. Apparently, in the full version which goes for 400mp ($5) lets you play against other XBox Live players with the ability to use voice-chat. I don’t know if I really want to here little 12 year old cracking voices while I’m playing Uno. Also, the full version apparently allows you to purchase special decks. So…. I can pay money to have different colored cards? I dunno, sounds lame.

All in all thought, it’s fun to play Uno itself. It’s still the classic Uno game you know. You can make your own rules or play by other rulesets if you want just as if you had the real card game. I’m wondering how well it will do against other games coming out. When it comes down to it, will you spend $5 for Lumines Live which looks awesome or $5 for an old card game? I suppose it depends on what kind of games you like.
