Wow, That Sucked

I use Gentoo Linux since I run this on a small machine. Today, I decided it was upgrade day. I wanted to just upgrade a few things like Apache and PHP. I figured the upgrade would go similar to some of the other components I’ve upgraded in that it would just unpack and compile the source and I’d be ready to go. Nope, not a chance. See, the structure of the Apache install on Gentoo is already a little different from a typical Apache install when you do it by hand. Configs go in /etc/apache2, logs in /log/apache2, and documents in /var/www. I got used to the layout and I liked it alot. So, someone decided, “Hey, let’s mess with everyone and change up where the configs go”. Then, they split the configs in two places. Some stuff stayed in /etc/apache2 while some stuff was moved to /usr/lib/apache2. I can’t even tell you what I even did. I just symlink the crap out of everything until my server would start properly. I think some of it had to do with Apache having two copies of modules.d with one pointing to modules/libphp4.so and the other pointing to extramodules/libphp4.so. How fun! I see mysql is hankering for an upgrade but I can only imagine the disaster that awaits me when I upgrade that.
