How to Kill a Blog

So, I’ve been looking at how to get my new URL out there for people to see. I did the usual URL submission thing and then I looked into blog submission sites. I foung Pingoat which is apparently quite new, only 1 month old. One interesting feature this site has is an online Google Sitemap generator that you can use to create a Google Sitemap for your site. Anyway, I figured what the heck and I submitted my blog URL for update to all of the blog ping services they had. I figured much like a search engine that the site would just queue up a crawl and start crawling the site over time. I have the server sitting right across the room and I notice that the hard drive started to crap itself. I couldn’t ssh into the box so I walk over and it takes forever to even login to the console.

I finally got logged in and brought up ‘top’. My system was swapping itself to death. Eventually, my machine stopped making noises. So, I went back to my laptop to bring up the site and there was no pulse. I restart Apache, still no pulse. I restart Mysql, still no pulse. I was a little worried that perhaps I had stressed out this old piece of hardware and that something just gave up. I restarted the entire box and finally got a sign of life.

So, word of caution when messing with the blog submission sites. Get over zealous and you might just be in for a reboot. :-)
